Community Hope

Everyone is in need of someone to incarnationally display and speak the Gospel into their lives.  Keep reading as my man Eric Saunders describes some volunteer and vocational opportunities to be about this work.  Help meet real needs to earn the right to meet someone’s deepest need in Christ:

If you are looking for a local missions opportunity in Raleigh, the YMCA’s Community Hope program may be the program that you are looking for. Community Hope is an academically structured mentoring and literacy program that addresses the individual learning needs of students living in affordable housing communities in Raleigh.

Along with academic development, Community Hope also believes in the local church. Each Community Hope is partnered with a neighboring church. The church typically provides program space, along with providing mentors and additional support when needed. Because of these partnerships, Community Hope has seen families transformed because mentors not only provided academic mentoring, but also demonstrated and proclaimed the gospel of Jesus Christ. It is our hope that each of our students and families will hear and respond to the life-giving message of the gospel.

To this end, we hope that we can fill our programs with Southeastern students who love Jesus and love people. This program meshes well with Southeastern strong emphasis on missions and diversity while also providing an opportunity for students to humbly love and serve our community like Jesus.

Here are a few opportunities that we have available:

Volunteer Mentors:  Community Hope relies heavily on volunteers. We need volunteers Monday through Thursday from 4:30 – 5:30 p.m. or 5:30 – 6:30 p.m. during the school year to help with literacy development. Each student is paired with two adult mentors who strongly support the student for an entire school year and often longer.

We also have positions available:

Part Time Assistant Site Coordinator: Under the supervision of the Site Coordinator, this person is responsible for assembling the curriculum for each mentoring sessions. This person is also responsible for provided leadership during the mentoring session by ensuring the group control of students and forming positive relationships with mentors and families.

Full Time Site Coordinator: Under the supervision of the Outreach Director, this person is responsible for the operation of a Community Hope Site. This person is responsible for communicating with church partners, mentors, and families. This person is also responsible for planning Community Hope events and celebrations within the Community.
